"Above Red Oaks I from Jeremiah M. Carter & Kelby Clark’s forthcoming Townsend EP is a document of acoustic improvisation amidst the ambience of the Appalachian mountains. The recording of fiddle and dobro was captured outside, on a porch in Townsend, Tennessee as a thunderstorm rolled in. Throughout the 12-minute take, gestural interplay of drones and plucked strings begin to emphasize and play off of the dynamics of the environment as the storm passes, and birds burst out in song. While encompassing aspects of field recording, experimental music, free-jazz, and drone; the heart of the EP is rooted in musical traditions of the American South which act as a starting point for further sonic expression. The remainder of tracks on the Townsend EP follow ‘Above Red Oaks I’ in spirit, but expand it’s scope into territories of both further abstraction and minimalism, and in contrast; towards traditional folk music as well."
